Comments by Colombian President Gustavo Petro suggesting Jesus “made love” have triggered widespread backlash from Christian groups and reignited debate over religion and politics in the country.
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has drawn strong reactions from Christians after claiming Jesus “made love,” possibly with disciple Mary Magdalene, during a recent speech. The remarks shocked many in the deeply religious country, where Christian beliefs remain culturally significant, according to reports from AFP.
Petro said Jesus “could not exist without love” and “died surrounded by women who loved him,” insisting he “made love, perhaps with Mary Magdalene.” Christian doctrine traditionally holds that Jesus lived a life of chastity and never married, making the comments controversial among religious leaders and worshippers.
Bogota Christian Benjamin Gonzalez told AFP Petro had gone “against the Church and against all churches,” while Victor Pardo said the remarks were “not appropriate for the president.” Religious groups urged respect, as opposition figures described the comments as a “provocation,” fueling nationwide debate.
