Democrats clamored for George Santos’ ouster. Soon they could face having to evict one of their own

House Democrats are facing a political and ethical dilemma as they weigh the potential expulsion of Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick amid federal fraud charges and GOP-led efforts to hold her to the same standard as former Representative George Santos.

The House Ethics Committee is set to hold its first public trial in nearly 16 years to determine if Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) should face expulsion over allegations of embezzling millions in FEMA funds and committing campaign finance violations. While Democratic leaders like Hakeem Jeffries maintain she is “entitled to her day in court and the presumption of innocence,” the party faces intense pressure to avoid charges of hypocrisy following their aggressive push to remove Republican George Santos for similar misconduct.

Rank-and-file Democrats have expressed concern over the optics of the case, with Rep. Stephen Lynch noting, “You lose your credibility if you’re applying a different set of laws and a different standard to people of the other party,” while Cherfilus-McCormick maintains her innocence, stating, “the full facts will make clear I did nothing wrong.”
