While Democratic leaders like Hakeem Jeffries maintain she is “entitled to her day in court and the presumption of innocence,” the party faces intense pressure to avoid charges of hypocrisy following their aggressive push to remove Republican George Santos for similar misconduct.
Rank-and-file Democrats have expressed concern over the optics of the case, with Rep. Stephen Lynch noting, “You lose your credibility if you’re applying a different set of laws and a different standard to people of the other party,” while Cherfilus-McCormick maintains her innocence, stating, “the full facts will make clear I did nothing wrong.”
