Elon Musk’s Grok limits image generator after controversy over nude images

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has limited access to its image generation feature on social media platform X after a wave of users created nonconsensual nude deepfakes, including images of minors and public figures, according to a report from POLITICO.

Grok said that “image generation is currently limited to paying subscribers” because “this helps ensure responsible use while we continue refining things,” citing “recent issues and improvements to safeguards.”

The move comes as European regulators escalate scrutiny of X, with the European Commission ordering the company to preserve “all internal documents and data relating to Grok,” calling the sexually explicit deepfakes “illegal,” “appalling” and “disgusting.”

Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said the restriction does not affect the ongoing investigation, adding: “Limiting image generation and editing to paid subscribers, this does not change our fundamental issue… Paid subscription, or not paid subscription, we don’t want to see such images.”
