Fast-spreading stomach virus sweeps California as cases climb nationwide

As rotavirus levels spike in California wastewater and across the country, a federal court has temporarily halted efforts by the health department to roll back universal vaccination recommendations for children.

A fast-spreading resurgence of rotavirus is impacting California, with WastewaterSCAN data identifying “high concentrations” in cities such as San Jose, Santa Cruz, and Marin, while “moderate concentrations” have been detected in San Francisco and Sacramento. This highly contagious virus, a leading cause of severe watery diarrhea and vomiting in young children, has shown rising levels across most of the U.S. since December, though a federal judge recently blocked an order by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that sought to scale back universal vaccination recommendations in favor of “informed consent.”

Despite the ongoing legal battle over federal guidance, the California Department of Public Health emphasizes that while vaccines have historically prevented millions of cases, the virus still results in 20 to 40 deaths annually. Health officials continue to monitor the surge as Kennedy argues for aligning U.S. policy with international standards, noting that “the change aims to align U.S. policy with international standards and emphasize informed consent.”
