A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration’s $400 million White House ballroom project, ruling that the president lacks the legal authority to proceed without congressional approval.
A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction on Tuesday halting construction of a $400 million ballroom at the White House, ruling that the Trump administration lacks the “express authorization from Congress” required to proceed with the project. In a sharp rebuke of the administration’s claims of authority, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon wrote that “no statute comes close to giving the President the authority he claims to have,” further noting that while the president serves as a steward for future families, “He is not, however, the owner!”
The order, which takes effect in 14 days to allow for a potential appeal, prompted an immediate social media backlash from President Trump, who labeled the petitioning National Trust for Historic Preservation “a Radical Left Group of Lunatics whose funding was stopped by Congress in 2005.”
