After nearly nine decades as a premier political barometer, Gallup is retiring its individual presidential approval ratings to focus on broader social and economic research.
Gallup has announced it will cease its iconic presidential approval and favorability polls, ending a data series that began in the 1930s. The agency stated the decision “reflects an evolution in how Gallup focuses its public research,” opting to prioritize long-term studies on global conditions. A spokesperson confirmed the shift is a strategic move to align with the organization’s modern research goals.
“Our commitment is to long-term, methodologically sound research on issues and conditions that shape people’s lives,” the agency stated Wednesday. The move comes as President Trump’s approval recently dipped to 36%, following a historic government shutdown. While the White House was not consulted, Gallup noted the change allows for deeper focus on non-partisan issues like workplace engagement and the impacts of AI.
