A Bangladeshi single mother, Yasmin Chowdhury 48, was killed in a violent hammer attack outside the a Chevron gas station in Fort Myers, Florida.
The suspect, Rolbert Joachin 40, first smashed the windshield of her car with the hammer. When Yasmin came out of the store to confront him and check on the damage, he shouted “Give me my money” before striking her multiple times in the head with the hammer. She collapsed at the scene and was pronounced dead shortly after.
Joachin fled but was arrested hours later following a manhunt and taken to the Lee County Jail, where he faces charges of homicide and criminal mischief. He is being held without bond.
A 48-year-old Bangladeshi mother’s 12-year struggle to build a life in the U.S. ended in a brutal hammer attack. Nilufar Yasmin was fatally assaulted on April 2, 2026, while intervening in a vandalism outside a Fort Myers, Florida convenience store.
Police arrested Rolbert Joachin, 40, a habitual offender. Investigators are now probing a possible motive: a heated dispute just 24 hours prior, when Yasmin advised Joachin to contact his bank about a failed ATM transaction. After issuing vague threats, he allegedly returned with a heavy-duty hammer.
Yasmin was the sole breadwinner for her two daughters, aged 16 and 20. Prosecutors may seek first-degree murder charges, citing the prior confrontation as evidence of intent. A community fund has been set up to support her daughters’ education, keeping her dream alive.
