A legal resident and kidney transplant recipient is reportedly facing life-threatening medical neglect in ICE custody after officials allegedly failed to administer his essential anti-rejection medication.
A Minnesota kidney transplant recipient, Javier Abreu-Vasquez, has allegedly been denied life-saving anti-rejection medication for over four days following his arrest by ICE. His wife, Carolina Rosario De Abreu, reported that despite delivering the pills and a doctor’s note to federal officials, her husband remains without the daily treatment required to prevent organ failure.
State Rep. Kim Hicks, who assisted the family, questioned the violent nature of the arrest and the subsequent medical neglect. While DHS claimed ICE provides “comprehensive medical care,” Hicks noted Abreu-Vasquez is in the U.S. legally. She asked, “I don’t understand why the federal government is… violently ripping them off the streets… and then denying them access to life-saving medication.”
