Iran has retaliated against the EU’s terror designation of the IRGC by branding European armies as terrorist groups, further escalating already high regional and diplomatic tensions.
Iran has designated European armies as “terrorist groups” in retaliation for the European Union’s decision to label the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organisation. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the move was taken under national countermeasure laws, accusing Europe of acting against its own interests.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas defended the designation, saying repression could not “go unanswered.” The move comes amid heightened regional tensions, deadly protests in Iran, and warnings from Tehran of a “comprehensive” response to any attack, even as Iran and the US signal possible talks.
