Israel has confirmed killing IRGC Navy chief Alireza Tangsiri in a strike near the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions in the ongoing regional conflict with Iran.
Tangsiri, head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, in an early morning strike in Bandar Abbas near the Strait of Hormuz. Benjamin Netanyahu said the commander, described as a key figure in recent maritime operations, died alongside several senior aides.
Israeli officials linked Tangsiri to actions aimed at disrupting shipping in the strategic waterway, including alleged efforts to block the Strait of Hormuz. Defence authorities described the strike as part of ongoing military operations targeting Iran’s naval capabilities amid escalating conflict involving Israel, Iran and allied forces.
Tangsiri, who led the IRGC Navy since 2018, had overseen expansion of maritime operations, including the use of drones and naval mines. His death is expected to have significant implications for regional security and shipping routes, as tensions remain high across the Gulf and wider Middle East.
