A Tunisian lawmaker, Ahmed Saidani, has been sentenced to eight months in prison after a Facebook post mocking President Kais Saied led to his arrest and prosecution.
A Tunisian court has sentenced lawmaker Ahmed Saidani to eight months in prison after he mocked Kais Saied in a Facebook post following the president’s visit to flood-affected areas. Reacting to the visit, Mr Saidani wrote, “It seems that the new title will be the Supreme Tunisian lawmaker, Ahmed Saidani, and Rainwater Drainage. “Of course, this is not a mockery of his majesty, nor a mockery of a patriotic man who works as mayor and employee of the sanitation department at the same time.” Authorities subsequently arrested and prosecuted the lawmaker over the post, and the court handed down the eight-month jail term on Thursday.
