A Kentucky man was arrested for riding a horse while intoxicated after police found him slumped over the animal following a trip to a liquor store.
Police in Bowling Green, Kentucky, arrested 48-year-old Jorge Hernandez on Thursday evening after an officer spotted him “partially slumped over” the controls of a brown horse while riding through a residential neighborhood. According to the arrest report, the officer performed a traffic stop at approximately 6 PM when Hernandez began riding the animal on a sidewalk. The report notes that Hernandez reportedly smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, and exhibited slurred speech, prompting the unusual “galloping under the influence” investigation.
During the stop, Hernandez informed police that he had just left a liquor store and was in the process of returning home. This claim was supported by the discovery of a liquor store bag tied to the horse’s saddle. After failing a series of field sobriety tests, Hernandez was taken into custody and charged with operating a non-motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants. While the horse was listed as a “brown” vehicle of “other” make and model in the official paperwork, authorities have not specified who took custody of the animal following the rider’s arrest.
Following his booking into the county jail, Hernandez was released into the custody of federal agents due to an outstanding immigration warrant. The arrest documentation curiously lists the “vehicle” year as 2024, despite the transport in question being a live equine. This incident has drawn local attention to the enforcement of sobriety laws for non-motorized transport, ensuring that “our nation’s peace and unity” and public safety are maintained on both the roads and the sidewalks of Bowling Green.
