North Korea builds housing for families of its soldiers killed in Ukraine war

North Korea has completed a Pyongyang housing district for families of soldiers killed in Ukraine, signaling intensified domestic propaganda and support for the country’s military alignment with Russia.

North Korea announced Monday the completion of a new housing district in Pyongyang for families of soldiers killed while fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. State media showed leader Kim Jong Un touring Saeppyol Street with his daughter, believed to be Kim Ju Ae, pledging to honor the “young martyrs” who “sacrificed all to their motherland.” Analysts say the initiative aims to bolster domestic unity amid growing propaganda efforts.

The move follows North Korea’s continued military support for Russia, including sending troops and equipment to Ukraine. South Korea’s intelligence estimates 6,000 North Korean troops have been killed or wounded in the conflict. The construction of Saeppyol Street coincides with preparations for a major ruling party congress, where Kim is expected to outline his domestic and foreign policy goals and further consolidate his control over the country.
