An Air Canada Express jet collided with a fire truck on a runway at LaGuardia Airport, killing the pilot and copilot, injuring two others, and prompting a federal investigation.
An Air Canada plane collided with a rescue fire truck on a runway at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday, killing the pilot and copilot and injuring two others, a law enforcement official told CNN. The aircraft, operated by Jazz Aviation, struck a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle around 11:40 p.m. while it was responding to a separate incident.
“Emergency response protocols were immediately activated,” a spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said. “The airport is currently closed to facilitate the response and allow for a thorough investigation.” Two people inside the fire truck were injured, while images from the scene showed severe damage to the nose of the CRJ-900 aircraft carrying 72 passengers and four crew.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop shortly after the crash, while the National Transportation Safety Board said it would send investigators to the site. Air traffic control audio captured the moments after the collision, with a controller saying, “JAZZ 646, I see you collided with the vehicle. Just hold position. I know you can’t move. Vehicles are responding to you now.”
A passenger on board Air Canada Express Jazz 646, identified as Brady, has shared a firsthand account of the terrifying moments following the crash, along with photos from the scene as the aircraft remained on the tarmac.
