Merchant ships rescued 32 migrants and recovered two bodies off the coast of Italy on Easter Sunday, with 71 others feared dead following a shipwreck in the Mediterranean.
Two merchant vessels operating near the Italian coast recovered two bodies and rescued 32 survivors after a migrant boat capsized during a perilous crossing from Libya over the Easter weekend. According to the rescue charities Mediterranea Saving Humans and Sea-Watch, survivors reported that the vessel originally carried 105 passengers, leaving 71 others lost at sea in what has become one of the deadliest years for the central Mediterranean route.
While Italy’s interior ministry declined to comment and the coast guard did not immediately respond during the holiday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that at least 683 people have died in the region so far this year. The incident was documented in a video released by Sea-Watch, which showed roughly a dozen individuals clinging to the hull of a capsized orange boat as a commercial ship approached to provide assistance.
