A Louisiana middle school teacher arrested on charges of sexual abuse of a student just months after receiving Teacher of the Year honors now faces up to 10 years in prison.
Christie Oster, 38, an eighth-grade math teacher at Broussard Middle School in Lafayette, Louisiana, has been arrested and charged with indecent behavior with juveniles and carnal knowledge of a juvenile. The charges come just months after she was named the school’s 2025-26 Teacher of the Year last September. “Congratulations to our 2025-2026 BMS Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Christie Oster,” read a now-deleted Facebook post from the school. “At BMS, we are proud of ALL of our amazing teachers and staff who give so much each day to our students.”
Oster has been placed on leave by Lafayette Parish School District and is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a former student, according to Lafayette Police. She is being held in Lafayette Parish Jail on $50,000 bond. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. The investigation remains ongoing.
