Britain has summoned the Iranian ambassador to protest alleged state-linked espionage and surveillance of Jewish targets and military sites, signaling a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions.
The British foreign ministry on Monday summoned Iran’s ambassador to London, Seyed Ali Mousavi, to formally condemn Tehran’s “reckless and destabilising actions” following the charging of two individuals under the National Security Act for allegedly assisting a foreign intelligence service.
The summons comes after Nematollah Shahsavani, a dual British-Iranian national, and Alireza Farasati, an Iranian citizen, appeared in court accused of conducting hostile surveillance of London’s Jewish community and synagogues, while a separate incident involving an Iranian man and a Romanian woman attempting to breach the Faslane nuclear submarine base in Scotland further heightened security concerns. A Foreign Office spokesperson emphasized that “this government will take all measures necessary to protect the British people, including exposing Iran’s reckless and destabilising actions at home and abroad,” as domestic intelligence services warn of a growing threat from Tehran amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel.
