‘Acts of war unauthorized by Congress’: Trump’s congressional critics denounce Iran strikes

Congress is sharply divided after Trump’s joint U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran, with critics calling the action unauthorized and supporters defending it as necessary for national security.

Several congressional critics rebuked President Donald Trump’s decision to launch joint U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran, calling the move an unauthorized act of war. Rep. Thomas Massie labeled the operation “acts of war unauthorized by Congress,” while Sens. Ruben Gallego and Mark Warner warned the strikes risk dragging the U.S. into another prolonged Middle East conflict. Lawmakers including Sen. Tim Kaine and Rep. Ro Khanna are pushing for a war powers vote, arguing Congress must approve further military action.

Republican leaders and several Democrats backed the operation, describing it as necessary to counter Iran’s nuclear ambitions and regional threats. Sen. Lindsey Graham praised the strikes as “long justified,” while Senate Majority Leader John Thune commended Trump’s action and called for a full briefing. The administration said top congressional leaders were notified ahead of the strikes, though critics maintain lawmakers and the public have not been given sufficient justification.
