China has sentenced former justice minister Tang Yijun to life imprisonment after convicting him of taking nearly $20m in bribes over 16 years.
A Chinese court on Monday sentenced former justice minister Tang Yijun to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of accepting bribes totalling nearly $20m over more than a decade. Tang, 64, served as justice minister from 2020 to 2023 and previously held senior roles including governor of Liaoning province.
The court said Tang abused “the advantages associated with the positions he successively held” to obtain benefits for individuals and companies between 2006 and 2022. While describing the offences as causing “extremely serious damage,” it noted mitigating factors, including his confession, remorse and cooperation with investigators.
