Expert highlights unique mental health risks elite athletes like Olympians can face

A Colorado mental health expert says elite athletes face distinct psychological pressures and urges greater support and open conversation.

Elite athletes, including Olympians, face unique mental health challenges despite public perceptions of strength and success, a University of Colorado expert said. Matthew Mishkind of the Johnson Depression Center cited sleep disruption, travel and intense media scrutiny. “Just because you’re making money, just because you’re famous, that doesn’t really protect against everything,” he said.

Mishkind described a common “post-Olympics blues” when competition ends and attention fades. “You’re on this amazing high, and then it goes away,” he said. “Who am I without the sport?” He added, “You can have mental health concerns, and you can still be really productive.” Lawmakers at the Colorado State Capitol are discussing a bill requiring mental health training for coaches.
