Spanberger used the Democratic State of the Union rebuttal to criticise Trump’s immigration enforcement and tariff policies, arguing they increased costs for Americans while Republicans rejected her claims.
Abigail Spanberger sharply criticised Donald Trump during the Democratic response to his State of the Union address, focusing on affordability and immigration policies. The Virginia governor accused the administration of deploying Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who detained individuals without warrants and said tariff policies had increased financial pressure on American families, farmers and small businesses.
Spanberger referenced a Democratic report estimating Trump’s tariffs added more than $1,700 in costs per household and argued that even after the United States Supreme Court struck down key tariffs, economic damage had already been felt. Republicans pushed back, with the Republican Governors Association accusing Spanberger of hypocrisy on affordability as both parties position immigration and cost-of-living issues ahead of the midterm elections.
