California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused the Trump administration of using the Justice Department to investigate him and his wife in a politically motivated bid to derail his potential 2028 presidential run.

The California governor went public Monday, accusing the Trump Justice Department of launching a politically motivated investigation into him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, according to the New York Times. Federal agents have reportedly questioned friends, former employees, and associates of the couple over the past week, with subpoenas for banking records also suspected.
“He’s coming after me because I am considering running for president,” Newsom said in a video address. “To get me, he’s coming after my wife.”
The investigation reportedly centres partly on Siebel Newsom’s nonprofit finances — though no evidence of wrongdoing has surfaced publicly. A source familiar with the matter pushed back on Newsom’s framing, saying the probe was initiated by California-based federal officials, not Washington.
Newsom isn’t backing down — he’s already filed a public records request and sent out fundraising emails to cover legal fees.
Round one, apparently, has begun.
