Maine Democratic Gov. Janet Mills refused Tuesday to endorse Troy Jackson, the last-minute candidate party elites tapped to replace accused rapist Graham Platner on the November Senate ballot, according to an interview Mills gave to local outlet WMTW.
Mills told the outlet she hasn’t spoken with Jackson, though she still wants Republican Sen. Susan Collins defeated. “We haven’t spoken, but clearly Susan Collins is vulnerable, and she should be — she should be defeated,” Mills said.
Mills had spent months warning Democrats that Platner’s baggage was too heavy, backed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as the party’s strongest option before Sen. Bernie Sanders-aligned operatives recruited Platner instead. Mills suspended her own campaign April 30, citing a lack of funds.
Jackson, who previously opposed abortion and same-sex marriage, now faces skepticism from a base Mills’ attacks failed to unite.
