Supreme court limits Federal power to disarm drug users

The US Supreme Court has ruled that the government cannot automatically deny gun ownership rights to all marijuana users without proving they pose a danger.

The US Supreme Court has unanimously ruled in favour of a Texas man who challenged a federal law that bars unlawful drug users from owning firearms, in a decision that could reshape how gun restrictions are applied in the United States.

According to CNN, the case involved Ali Danial Hemani, who was charged after authorities found a firearm and marijuana in his possession. Hemani argued that the federal ban violated his constitutional right to bear arms.

In its 9-0 ruling, the court said the government failed to show that Hemani’s marijuana use made him dangerous enough to justify taking away his gun rights. Justice Neil Gorsuch said restrictions on constitutional rights must be supported by evidence rather than broad assumptions.

CNN reports that while the law remains in place, the ruling limits its application and could influence future gun rights challenges.
