Oklahoma pastor and former Trump-backed congressional candidate Jackson Lahmeyer has suspended his campaign after reports revealed he exchanged romantic text messages with a woman who was not his wife.
Jackson Lahmeyer, an Oklahoma megachurch pastor and founder of the “Pastors for Trump” movement, has suspended his campaign for Congress after reports surfaced that he exchanged romantic text messages with a woman who was not his wife.
According to the AP News, Lahmeyer announced his withdrawal just one day after advancing to a Republican runoff for Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District. He said the decision followed discussions with his wife and campaign team and was made to avoid becoming a distraction to his family, church and supporters.
The move came moments after President Donald Trump shifted his endorsement to Lahmeyer’s runoff opponent, Oklahoma state representative Mark Tedford. Trump had previously backed Lahmeyer’s congressional bid.
Lahmeyer had acknowledged the texting incident and said the matter had been handled privately. His exit leaves Tedford as the overwhelming favourite to secure the Republican nomination.
