California cops deploy drones to disarm suspects, make arrests

Sacramento County deputies used a magnet-equipped drone to lift a knife straight out of an armed suspect’s hand during a standoff, a tactic officials call a nationwide first for law enforcement.

Forget the battering ram — bring in the magnet. Sacramento County deputies pulled off what officials call a nationwide first: using a drone to physically disarm a suspect mid-standoff, according to SFGATE.

The suspect had barricaded himself inside a residence, ignoring negotiators while clutching a knife. Rather than risk an entry, the Sheriff’s Office sent in a drone rigged with a high-powered magnet. It zeroed in, snagged the blade right out of his hand, and flew off with it — clearing the way for a safe arrest.

It’s part of a bigger shift. California’s “Drone as First Responder” programs are scaling fast; San Bernardino County alone has used drones in over 100 incidents for arrests, locating suspects, and monitoring emergencies — all without putting officers in the line of fire first.
