France heatwave death toll rises as funeral homes reach capacity

France’s record-breaking heatwave has killed around 1,000 people since June 24, with funeral homes particularly in Paris running out of space as the death toll continues to rise.

France’s killer heatwave is overwhelming its funeral infrastructure. Mortuaries, especially in Paris are running out of space, with the head of the National Funeral Federation, Elisabeth Charrier, reporting occupancy above 66 per cent nationwide and some facilities already full.

Families are being forced to search beyond the capital for available space, with longer waits expected for cremations and burials. The elderly are bearing the heaviest toll, Public Health France has recorded around 1,000 excess deaths since June 24, with roughly 85 per cent involving people aged 65 and above.

AFP, as reported by The PUNCH, says authorities expect the death toll to climb further as additional cases are confirmed.
