A woman in Indonesia’s Aceh province has been publicly caned 27 times after a Sharia court convicted her of broadcasting obscene content in what is believed to be one of the first such cases involving social media livestreaming in the region.

INDONESIAN WOMAN CANED FOR OBSCENE SOCIAL MEDIA LIVESTREAM
A couple in Indonesia’s Aceh province have been publicly caned after being reported to authorities for kissing during a TikTok livestream — marking the first time in the province that people have been punished for a Sharia violation committed through social media, per the Daily Mail.
The woman received 27 lashes before collapsing to the ground clutching her back. Medics assessed her condition to determine whether she was fit enough for the punishment to continue. Under local rules, any remaining lashes are postponed — not cancelled — until she recovers.
Aceh’s Sharia police head Muhammad Rizal confirmed the case to reporters, saying the couple “clearly violated Islamic Sharia.”
Her partner was also caned. Four other convicts received lashes on the same day — another couple punished for physical intimacy, and two men caned for gambling.
Amnesty International Indonesia described the punishment as “a horrifying act of discrimination,” saying the Aceh Islamic Criminal Code had “expanded its reach to target peaceful expressions in the digital sphere.”
Amnesty added: “Caning contravenes Indonesia’s constitution and is in clear violation of international human rights law and standards.”
Aceh is the only Indonesian province permitted to enforce a version of Islamic Sharia law. Caning is used to punish offences including gambling, alcohol consumption, same-sex relationships and extramarital sex.
