A new Wall Street Journal-NORC survey finds that American confidence in capitalism has dropped significantly over the past decade, with only about a third of respondents believing the country still offers a real shot at the American dream.
US Support For Capitalism Declines
The numbers tell a sobering story about how Americans see their own economic system.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, a new Wall Street Journal-NORC survey found just under half of Americans now believe capitalism is working very well or somewhat well — down from 60% about a decade ago. Even more striking, only 35% say they’re fairly confident the country still gives people a real chance to land good jobs and achieve the American dream.
The survey also found a generational and ideological split, with older and more conservative respondents expressing greater optimism about the country’s direction than their younger, more liberal counterparts.
