Britain has a new prime minister. King Charles III on Monday appointed Andy Burnham to the role, shortly after outgoing PM Keir Starmer tendered his resignation at Buckingham Palace, the palace announced, Vanguard reports.
“Andrew Burnham MP accepted The King’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement, adding that the king had asked him to form the next government.
Burnham’s appointment caps a swift transition of power, coming just hours after Starmer’s farewell speech outside 10 Downing Street, where he said he was leaving Britain “stronger and fairer” than he found it.
