The problem is timing. Ramadan falls in November-December 2034, the same winter window FIFA used for Qatar 2022. Shifting daily life around fasting makes hosting there messy. Earlier slots collide too: January-February bumps into the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, while March brings Hajj, an unmovable pilgrimage tied to the lunar calendar.
That leaves a narrow opening in early 2035 — roughly six to seven weeks between New Year’s and mid-February’s Hajj — to stage matches across 15 stadiums, according to a Politico report by Zoha Qamar.
Another winter World Cup would reignite European club-season frustrations from 2022, and adds to broader scrutiny of Saudi Arabia as host. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said last October the sport should stay open-minded about tournament timing.
