A new analysis suggests OpenAI is set to massively undershoot its ambitious ad revenue projections, raising fresh doubts about the AI industry’s financial future.
OpenAI’s Ad Revenue Dreams Fall $90 Billion Short
OpenAI has projected $100 billion in annual ad revenue by 2030, but new data suggests that’s wildly unrealistic, according to a Futurism report citing an Emarketer analysis first flagged by AdWeek.
Emarketer pegs the entire addressable chatbot ad market at just $5.4 billion — and estimates OpenAI, Microsoft, Google and Amazon combined will earn under $1 billion in 2026, far below OpenAI’s own $2.5 billion target for this year.
To hit its 2030 goal, the report notes, OpenAI would need advertisers to abandon search and social media entirely, and out-compete Google and Meta in the process.
