Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned, citing worsening health, with an election for his successor expected within 90 days.

The 76-year-old announced his resignation in a letter to parliament speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Friday, according to Peoples Gazette. He cited “worsening physical and mental incapacity” as the reason he could no longer discharge his constitutional duties, though he will remain in office until a new leader is elected.
Shahabuddin was elected to the ceremonial post by parliament in 2023. He remained in office through the 2024 uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina, the subsequent interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s election win in February.
