WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from wife Cherelle Griner after eight years of marriage, citing an irretrievable breakdown with no hope of reconciliation.

The marriage that survived Griner’s Russian detention has come to an end. Per ABC News, the Connecticut Sun player filed for divorce on Thursday in Fulton County, Georgia, with court documents stating the couple has been separated since July 24, 2026.
The petition seeks joint physical custody of their son Bash, born in 2024, along with an “equitable division” of marital debts and assets. Brittney Griner’s attorney told ABC News the matter is “hoped” to be resolved privately, declining further comment. Cherelle Griner has not yet responded to ABC News’ request for comment.
The couple married in June 2018, with Cherelle publicly advocating for Brittney’s release during her 2022 detention in Russia.
