U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that any country doing business with Iran will face a 25% tariff on trade with the United States, escalating pressure amid Iran’s largest anti-government protests in years.
“Effective immediately, any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, adding, “This Order is final and conclusive.”
The announcement drew immediate international attention, with the Chinese embassy in Washington criticizing the move and pledging to take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its interests, while Japan and South Korea said they are monitoring developments closely.
The tariffs, which U.S. importers would pay, target Iran’s global trade partners amid ongoing tensions, including Tehran’s confrontations with Israel and heightened U.S. pressure on the Iranian government, though White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that “diplomacy is always the first option for the president.”
