Families sue after British tourists died from stomach illnesses in Cape Verde

Families of British tourists who died after gastric illnesses in Cape Verde are taking legal action against Tui as lawyers investigate widespread sickness linked to the destination.

Four British tourists died within four months last year after contracting severe gastric illnesses while holidaying in Cape Verde, according to lawyers representing their families. The victims are among six Britons who have died since January 2023, with families pursuing personal injury claims against holiday firm Tui.

Law firm Irwin Mitchell said investigations were “ongoing” and that it was also representing more than 1,500 people who became ill after visiting the islands. Mark Ashley’s wife Emma said her family was in “complete shock,” raising concerns about hygiene standards at the resort where they stayed.

Karen Pooley’s husband Andy said: “We’re utterly heartbroken,” adding the family struggled with poor communication from medical staff and providers. Tui said it was unable to comment further due to legal representation but confirmed it was fully investigating the claims.
