French prosecutors raid X offices over child abuse images, deepfakes

French authorities raided X’s offices and summoned Elon Musk as part of an investigation into child abuse images, deepfakes, and misuse of AI, amid related probes in the UK and EU.

French prosecutors raided the offices of social media platform X on Tuesday as part of an investigation into allegations including spreading child sexual abuse images and sexually explicit deepfakes. Billionaire Elon Musk, owner of X and AI firm xAI, has been summoned for questioning. The Paris prosecutors’ cybercrime unit opened the probe last January, citing “complicity” in distributing pornographic images of minors, denial of crimes against humanity, and misuse of automated data systems.

The French probe comes amid broader international scrutiny, with Britain’s data privacy regulator investigating X and xAI over personal data handling in the development of Musk’s AI chatbot Grok. Grok had sparked global outrage last month for generating sexualized nonconsensual deepfake images and posts denying the Holocaust. A spokesperson for Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office said, “The reports about Grok raise deeply troubling questions about how people’s personal data has been used.”
