Mondelēz Global LLC has expanded its voluntary recall of Chips Ahoy! Baked Bites Brookie due to manufacturing errors that created cornstarch clumps posing a choking risk.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Wednesday an expansion of the nationwide recall for Chips Ahoy! Baked Bites Brookie. The voluntary measure by Mondelēz Global LLC stems from an “incorrect mixing process” that created small, hard cornstarch clumps in the cookies. The updated alert now includes additional product pouches and a new code date.
No injuries have been reported, but officials warn the clumps pose a significant risk to children and the elderly. “Due to the characteristics and size of the small starch clumps, the clump could constitute a choking hazard, particularly in special risk groups,” the alert states. Consumers are urged to discard the affected snacks or contact the company for a full refund.
