Mexico is considering legal action after Elon Musk accused President Sheinbaum of cartel ties following a cartel leader’s killing.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government is considering legal action after tech billionaire Elon Musk alleged she was linked to drug cartels on X.
Sheinbaum said, “We are considering whether to take legal action,” adding lawyers are reviewing the post, which followed the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho.” She stressed Mexico seeks peace, not escalation, in its security strategy.
Musk’s post responded to a 2025 video of Sheinbaum discussing drug violence, claiming she was “saying what her cartel bosses tell her to say” without evidence. Party officials criticized the comment, with Luisa Alcalde saying, “Wealth does not give moral authority,” urging Musk to use his platform to combat disinformation and drug culture promotion.
