Trump presses UK to boost North Sea drilling amid Iran war price spike

Donald Trump has urged Sir Keir Starmer to immediately expand North Sea drilling as surging energy prices linked to the Iran conflict intensify pressure on the UK government.

Donald Trump has urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to restart North Sea drilling “immediately” as energy prices surge following the Iran conflict.

Wholesale gas prices in Europe rose 20% Tuesday after a 40% jump Monday, while Brent crude climbed above $80 a barrel. “Open up the North Sea. Immediately. Your energy prices are through the roof,” Mr Trump told The Sun.

Labour has raised the windfall tax on oil and gas producers and restricted new exploration licences, drawing criticism from industry figures. Alasdair Locke of Motor Fuel Group said rising prices exposed “the absurdity of a lot of our current energy policy.” He added: “Why on earth are we shutting down our own production in the North Sea on the alter of net zero?”
