AI fakes turning satellite images into war misinfo…

AI-generated and altered satellite images are spreading rapidly online during the Middle East conflict, prompting experts and platforms to warn of growing misinformation risks.

Satellite images altered with artificial intelligence have been widely shared online amid the Middle East conflict, raising concerns about misinformation in wartime. An image circulated on X, including by Iran’s Tehran Times, purported to show damage to a US radar site in Qatar. Analysis by the Financial Times found the image was AI-modified from a location in Bahrain, despite verified footage and Planet Labs imagery confirming limited real damage.

Experts say generative AI is lowering the barrier to fabricating convincing satellite visuals. X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, said the platform would restrict revenue for users who fail to disclose AI content. Researchers warn satellite images lack obvious “biometric tells,” making manipulation harder to detect and increasing the risk of deception in fast-moving conflicts.
