Journalist kidnapped in Iraq, country’s Interior Ministry says

Iraqi authorities have arrested one suspect and are pursuing others following the kidnapping of American journalist Shelly Kittleson in central Baghdad on Tuesday.

Iraqi security forces launched an urgent manhunt in Baghdad on Tuesday following the kidnapping of American freelance journalist Shelly Kittleson by unidentified individuals. The Iraqi Interior Ministry confirmed that a foreign journalist was abducted in the capital, later stating that while a suspect was arrested after a getaway vehicle overturned, “efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining individuals involved, secure the release of the kidnapped journalist, and take all necessary legal measures.”

The U.S. State Department noted it is “closely tracking these reports,” adding that “due to privacy and other considerations, we have nothing further to share at this time.” The abduction occurs amid heightened regional tensions following the recent military campaign in Iran, a period during which the U.S. Embassy has repeatedly warned that “U.S. citizens choosing to remain in Iraq are doing so at significant risk.”
