Nonpartisan group says US national debt is 4x greater than Treasury reports
While the Treasury reports the national debt at roughly $39 trillion, the nonpartisan group Truth in Accounting puts the true figure at $170.3 trillion. This includes unfunded obligations such as $54 trillion in future Social Security benefits and $74.5 trillion for Medicare. The group’s founder argues the government has no plan to pay these promised benefits, which would require an extra $1.1 million per U.S. taxpayer over 75 years.
