Two dead, dozens missing after migrant boat capsizes in Mediterranean

Over 70 migrants are missing and two are confirmed dead after their boat capsized in the Mediterranean, an incident NGOs are blaming on a lack of safe, legal migration routes.

More than 70 people are missing and two have been confirmed dead after a migrant boat carrying approximately 105 passengers capsized in the central Mediterranean on Sunday. The vessel, which departed Libya on Saturday, overturned in a search-and-rescue zone under Libyan jurisdiction, prompting the rescue of 32 survivors who were subsequently transported to Lampedusa by commercial ships.

In a statement on social media, the NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans described the event as a “tragic Easter shipwreck” and asserted that the accident was “the consequence of policies by European governments that refuse to open safe and legal pathways” for migrants. The incident underscores a harrowing start to 2026, during which the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports at least 683 people have already died or gone missing at sea.
