Russia backs Iran’s uranium enrichment rights amid ongoing talks

Russia has voiced strong support for Iran’s right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, highlighting a growing divide with the United States over nuclear policy and ongoing negotiations.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow will accept “any approach” in Iran’s negotiations that recognizes its “inalienable right” to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes. Speaking during a visit to Beijing, Lavrov emphasized Russia’s backing whether Iran pauses enrichment or “insists on reserving this right.”

Lavrov said Russia and China “firmly support” ongoing talks, adding they aim to “advance realistic and fair goals” while respecting international law. He noted Iran’s participation in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which permits peaceful nuclear programs, though it does not explicitly address uranium enrichment.

However, Donald Trump reiterated opposition, stating there “will be no enrichment of Uranium.” Lavrov countered that the International Atomic Energy Agency has never found Iran’s enrichment efforts to have military intent. He also urged the United States to halt hostilities, warning continued aggression could harm even its allies.
