Americans rate Trump lower on honesty and decision-making

A Pew survey shows Trump’s approval and public confidence in his leadership traits have declined to new lows.

A new Pew Research Center survey shows President Donald Trump’s approval rating slipping as Americans reassess his personal traits and leadership.

Conducted among 5,103 adults between April 20–26, 2026, the poll finds his job approval now at 34%, the lowest of his second term. The report notes declining confidence in several areas, including his ability to make good decisions on immigration and use military force wisely.

Researchers also found reduced trust in his promises, with only 38% saying he “keeps his promises,” down from previous years. However, 64% still say he “stands up for what he believes in,” though this has also fallen.

The study highlights growing skepticism across party lines, including among Republicans. Analysts say perceptions of honesty and ethics in government have weakened during his presidency.
