An Italian public figure has spoken out after AI-generated fake photos of her circulated online, warning that deepfakes pose a serious danger to everyone and urging people to verify content before sharing.
Fake AI-generated photos crafted to appear genuine have been circulating online, allegedly spread by political opponents attempting to cause reputational damage.
Acknowledging the sophistication of the images, the subject noted with irony that whoever created them had actually made her look considerably better. However, she stressed that the deeper issue extends far beyond her personal situation.
“Deepfakes are a dangerous tool because they can deceive, manipulate and target anyone. I can defend myself. Many others cannot,” she warned.
She urged the public to adopt a simple but critical rule when encountering content online, saying: “Verify before believing, and think before sharing. Because today it happens to me, tomorrow it can happen to anyone
