George Retes, a U.S. Army veteran and citizen, has filed a federal lawsuit after being violently detained for three days by immigration agents during a chaotic workplace raid in California.
George Retes, a 25-year-old Army veteran and U.S. citizen, was violently detained for three days during an immigration raid while attempting to report for work, according to REASON. On July 10, 2025, Retes encountered a blockade at a legal cannabis farm where he worked as a contractor. Despite identifying himself as a citizen, federal agents shattered his car window, pepper-sprayed him, and knelt on his neck.
Retes was held in a suicide watch cell without a phone call or explanation. He missed his daughter’s birthday before being released without charges. “Literally the first words out of my mouth was that I was a U.S. citizen… and they just didn’t care,” Retes stated. The Department of Homeland Security later alleged he assaulted officers, a claim Retes calls a lie. He is now suing federal agencies, asserting, “We all deserve to be treated fairly and with human dignity.”
