Pressure mounts on Starmer as MPs demand resignation

Keir Starmer is battling to save his premiership as Labour MPs and senior ministers push for his resignation after major local election losses.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced mounting pressure Monday as nearly 80 Labour MPs and several senior ministers reportedly demanded he step down following heavy local election losses.

Reports said top Cabinet members, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, urged Starmer to consider a timetable for his departure after Labour lost nearly 1,500 council seats.

The crisis deepened after multiple government aides resigned or called for leadership change ahead of a key Cabinet meeting in Downing Street.

Despite the revolt, Starmer vowed to remain in office. “I know I have my doubters, and I know I need to prove them wrong – and I will,” he said.

He warned Labour against repeating the Conservatives’ “leadership merry-go-round” and pledged closer ties with Europe, while accusing Reform UK leader Nigel Farage of exploiting public frustration.
