California mayor Eileen Wang resigned after admitting to acting as an illegal agent for China and promoting Beijing-backed propaganda in the US.
Eileen Wang has resigned as mayor of Arcadia, California, after US prosecutors accused her of acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government.
Federal authorities said Wang, 58, is expected to plead guilty to promoting Chinese government propaganda in the United States between 2020 and 2022.
“Mayor Wang admitted to acting as a foreign agent from at least 2020 through 2022,” FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X.
Prosecutors alleged Wang worked with associates to publish pro-China content through a Chinese-American news website under directives from Chinese officials.
City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto described the allegations as “deeply troubling” but said no city funds or decision-making processes were affected.
Wang’s lawyer said she “apologizes and is sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life.”
